How can I edit the invoice after validation and after payment has been made? There could be an mistake detected after the invoice is processed which may be minor and I want to avoid creating a credit note to correct the invoice.

Normally it is not possible in order to avoid problem with the authorities.
But if you want to , you need to remove the payment and then you will be normally able to unvalidate
